I started a new gig this weekend.
I was bummed because my first day was Saturday and I missed my freeway exit and nearly wrecked my car on the drive in and it took me three tries before I finally found the right entrance to the lot and we don’t have good coffee or a proper kitchen or even a bathroom in the office where I’m working.
My room in the “cabin,” as it’s being referred to, has a terrible view, is prone to overheating and general stuffiness, and is separated from the edit bay next door by a very, very thin wall. I know this because within 2 minutes of my arrival, the editor next door began searching our music library and came upon a kitschy, euro-techno tune that blared “boom, tsk, boom, tsk, boom, tsk, boom, tsk, boom, tsk, boom, tsk, boom, tsk…” for a full 3 minutes.
60 seconds into “boom, tsk, boom, tsk, boom, tsk” (that’s the actual title of the song, by the way) I sighed and thought, “what…the…fuck?”
And then, just as I hit bottom, as if on cue, a man began to sing loudly along with music:
Music: Boom, tsk, boom, tsk, boom, tsk, boom, tsk…
Man: “Eyyyyyyyyyeee ammmmmmmm gaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyy!!!”
This time I didn’t just think it, I actually said the words, “what…the…fuck?”
But rather than sigh, I laughed.
I laughed a lot that day, and yesterday, and will probably continue to do so for the next 6 weeks because, in spite of the schedule and everything I complained about earlier, I’m working with people I genuinely enjoy being around and am going to have a good time regardless of what we’re doing.
So if I get bogged down with work and slack on the postings for a little while, know that I’m just stockpiling my experiences and will have at least 6 months of awkward moments and general good times to share when I’m done. So there’s that.
